Remember and Beyond.
About the Holocaust and the United Nations Outreach Programme.

«It would be a dangerous error to think of the Holocaust as simply the result of the insanity of a group of criminal Nazis. On the contrary, the Holocaust was the culmination of millennia of hatred, scapegoating and discrimination targeting the Jews, what we now call anti-Semitism».

Her Excellency Honorable António Guterres
General-Secretary of the United Nations.

«The International Day in memory of the victims of the Holocaust is thus a day on which we must reassert our commitment to the respect of the human rights.
We must also go beyond the remembrance, and make sure that the new generations know this history.
We must apply the lessons of the Holocaust to the world of today.
And we must do our utmost so that all the peoples must enjoy the protections and the rights for which the United Nations stands».

Her Excellency Honorable Ban Ki-Moon
Former General-Secretary of the United Nations.

Rejecting any denial of the Holocaust as a historical event, either in full or in part, the General Assembly of the United Nations has adopted the text of the Resolution (A/RES/60/7) that with the unanimous consensus of all the parties agreed condemns “without reserve” all the manifestations of ethnic, racial and religious intolerance, incitement to the hate, to the persecution and to the violences, harassment or violence against persons or communities based on ethnic or racial and religious origin for abject beliefs and purposes, whenever they occur.

The Members of the United Nations in the text of the Resolution have declared that the United Nations would designate the date of the 27th of January as the anniversary of the liberation of the camp for the concentration and for the death of Auschwitz as an “Annual International Day” of the Commemoration in memory of the victims of the Holocaust, of the Shoah”, and have urged the Member States to develop educational programmes to instill the memory of the tragedy in the future generations to prevent genocides from occurring again. It has requested to the Secretary-General of the United Nations to establish an outreach programme on “the Holocaust and the United Nations”, as well as institute measures to mobilize the civil society for the remembrance of the Holocaust and for the education and for the instruction, in order to help to prevent future acts of genocide.

The Holocaust was and it is a turning point in the course of the history, which has prompted the world to say “never again”. The significance of the Resolution A/RES/60/7 is that it calls for a remembrance of past crimes with an eye towards preventing them in the future.

The Message of the Secretary-General of the United Nations Her Excellency Honorable António Guterres on the “International Day of Commemoration in memory of the victims of the Holocaust … of the Shoah.

The 27th January 2018.

«Today we remember the six million Jewish men, women and children who perished in the Holocaust. Countless others also lost their lives as cruelty convulsed the world.
Yet decades since the Second World War, we see the persistence of anti-Semitism and an increase in other forms of prejudice.
Neo-Nazis and white supremacy groups are among the main purveyors of extreme hatred.
And too often, vile views are moving from the margins to the mainstream of societies and politics.
We must stand together against the normalization of hate.
Whenever and wherever humanity’s values are abandoned, we are all at risk.
All of us have a responsibility to quickly, clearly and decisively resist racism and violence.
Through education and understanding, we can build a future of dignity, human rights and peaceful coexistence for all».

Her Excellency Honorable António Guterres
General-Secretary of the United Nations.
